Speak Up: Reaction to surf-fishing permit announcement

Posted

Delaware’s Division of Parks and Recreation has announced changes to 2023 surf-fishing permits, including the requirement of reservations for summer weekends and holidays. There will be no cap on the number of annual permits sold. Reservations for the upcoming week will be made online or through a call center at a cost of $4 and will be available weekly on a first-come, first-served basis. How will the changes affect your fishing plans?

  • What is the total number of reservations they (the state) will allow for each day? — Debi Rucker
  • About time they sell as many as possible. Quit shutting beach fishers out! — Keith Wyatt
  • Who cares? That whole area is too crowded anyway. It will just make things worse. — Charlie Harper
  • I guess no spontaneous trips to the beach on a good day, low breeze. Our beaches are not for us any longer. — Kathi Adronene
  • What’s to avoid the registration system from receiving bogus reservations, where no one actually shows up and then blocks desiring users from being able to access the beach? Some random 500 reservations show up at $4 each, and for $2,000, the entire beach is shut down, but no one is actually on it. Seems like an easy way to do away with beach access. Sets a bad precedent. Next, we’ll be making reservations to enter state parks, access state lands for hunting, despite possibly already having a state park pass, conservation access pass, blind permits (currently managed by lottery), etc. Seems like double dipping. Sounds like the state trying to save money from not having to hire staff and set up an automated system. — Wayne Hurd
