Speak Up: Justice department requested prison time for McGuiness

Posted

The Delaware Department of Justice asked that State Auditor Kathy McGuiness receive 30 days in prison after she was found guilty of official misconduct involving her time in office. While the misdemeanor offense has a recommended sentence of probation, the state Oct. 14 pointed to the auditor’s supposed “severe lack of remorse, undue depreciation of her offenses, and brazen betrayal of the public trust” as factors to act beyond the guidelines.

  • Such a shame. Somebody really had it out for her. If you think she is the only one in the state that hired a relative to work for the state, then a review has to be done in each agency. Start with the Delaware Department of Transportation. This will make national news. — Vincent J. Deskiewicz Sr.
  • Yet, the former president had both his daughter and son-in-law on the payroll, and nobody said a peep. — Gary Greer

Delaware auditor receives probation in official-misconduct case

Delaware Auditor Kathy McGuiness received one year of Level I probation Oct. 19 after being found guilty in July of official misconduct involving her time in office. She is also responsible for a $10,000 fine, plus the cost of prosecution, and 500 hours of community service, said Superior Court Judge William C. Carpenter Jr. during sentencing. Following sentencing, Ms. McGuiness submitted her resignation.

  • What a joke. If this were anyone else, they would get a much harsher sentence. — Richard Benson
  • Shame she was found guilty. Hope it is all reversed by the Supreme Court. Dirty politics in Delaware. — Ruth Hamilton
