Speak Up: How should the state enforce vehicle window tint laws?

Posted

Whether you use tint on your vehicle’s windows or not, what do you think of it? Should it be allowable, regardless of medical need? Are Delaware’s laws on tint fair? What are your thoughts on its safety?

  • The tint law is there for a reason: officer safety. A police officer would like to know if a gun is pointing at him/her when they are approaching a vehicle during a traffic stop. Should it be a primary offense? No. — Sandy Johnson
  • It should be legal to have. The police have it. — Chuck Holliday
  • When you get a waiver, it’s attached to the registration. When the cop pulls the tag, doesn’t it show for them on their end? — Christina Fitzwater
  • It’s ridiculous to not be legally allowed to have window tint unless you have a waiver. Most police vehicles have window tint. If it’s an issue with safety, require people to put their front windows down when pulled over. — Kimberly Michelle
  • Right, so when they don’t put them down, then what? — Michael Forcade
  • So, as someone who moved to the state, I found it crazy that, in Delaware, the front two windows can’t be tinted. In the state we originally came from, you could have tint at 35% on the front two, and the back could be darker. Enforcing this should be a secondary offense. Again, it is in our previous residence, and if it’s too dark, then law enforcement can require you to remove it (some telling you to scrape it off, and some giving you so many days to correct it). — Jessica Sizemore
  • At 70 years old, with removed cataracts, I see super bright now. So, I need dark sunglasses. Tinted windows would be magnificent. But I also understand how hard it is for an official to see in a vehicle when needed, not just for getting info but for personal protection of officers. So, what really is right? I don’t know. — Denise Bella
  • They shouldn’t. It’s a ridiculous law. People are going to do what they want regardless of being pulled over. Meanwhile, the rest of us suffer. — Elizabeth Brode
  • Tint laws and vehicle inspections are pure government overreach. Time to move to a free state. — Erich Smith
  • Vehicle inspections are overreach? Wow. I guess you like to drive these highways with people who speed like maniacs, not knowing if they have brakes or not. It is already a toss-up that they do, but at least the vehicle gets inspected every once in a while to meet some safety standards. — Sandy Johnson
