Speak Up: How should local employers handle marijuana-related issues at work?

Posted

A recent forum hosted by the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce and the Delaware Society for Human Resource Management offered First State businesses the opportunity to learn about marijuana legalization and regulation laws that went into effect last spring, including how they impact the workplace and what policies can be set by employers. How do you think managers should handle cannabis-related matters with their employees?

  • One cannot arrive to a job drunk on alcohol. Almost all places of work require you to smoke outside in a designated place. Marijuana will make one either high or so relaxed they will not be able to do their work, drive or have full use of their mind. Employers need to set their rules at work before anyone starts, so all understand the rules. — Denise Bella
  • It’s all in the job and employer. Delaware is not a right-to-work state. They don’t even have to tell you why you have been let go. So you truly have no recourse. With that said, it truly doesn’t matter what the people say. Most Delaware politicians are business owners who set and push the laws. — Jeff Grzeszczak
