Speak Up: Heirs of Nutter Marvel oppose flying of Confederate flag in Georgetown

Posted

The grandchildren of the late Nutter David Marvel Sr. oppose the Confederate flag on the grounds of his namesake museum, saying it flies in the face of Mr. Marvel’s wishes. “My grandfather would be rolling over in his grave. He would never have allowed that to happen,” said Tom Marvel. “If they were to have come to him and asked him if they could put a monument and the Confederate flag out there, he would have politely said, ‘No, thank you.’”

  • Why don’t we get rid of all history, period? Then, everyone might be happy. This is getting really ridiculous. — Vicki J. Short
  • Claiming that flying a Confederate battle flag as a memorial for people who fought to preserve the right to own another human being and an economy built around that right is a tired and frankly absurd argument. That flag’s presence above the Nutter Marvel Museum does nothing to teach any meaningful history. A plaque or interpretive signage talking about the Sussex Countians who chose to fight against the United States teaches history. Books and articles about the Civil War and the conflicting ideologies in Sussex County at the time teach history. A “historical society” venerating these people and flying a flag with tremendous social baggage, a flag which was repopularized by politicians who fought tooth and nail against the civil rights movement in the ’50s and ’60s and was and is proudly waved by the Ku Klux Klan and neo-fascists, accomplishes nothing but whitewashing a stain on our country’s history. No one wants to “erase history,” but we can teach history without celebrating people who were on the wrong side of it. It doesn’t take so much as an ounce of empathy to consider how seeing that flag might make people who are descendants of slaves feel. — Andrew Martin
  • I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with you. Not here to argue. I’m just talking about all the other things that have been taken down in the past two or more years. — Vicki J. Short
  • Put it in a museum, they said. So now, it’s in a museum. The left still isn’t happy. There’s a meme that goes around that states, “History isn’t there for you to like; it’s for you to learn.” — Bob Hice
  • It’s flying at a museum at a memorial to honor Confederates. — Beth Barbosa Croken
  • Bob Hice, how would you feel if they were flying an ISIS flag to honor the Americans that decided to fight against your brothers in the Air Force? We don’t honor traitors. — Scott Ryan
