Speak Up: Dover Fire Department responds to record number of calls in 2022

Posted

Dover Fire Chief David Carey is not quite sure what to make of his department making a record 1,500 service calls in a calendar year on Christmas Day 2022. Obviously, we’re running more calls because someone was in need, but it was a milestone for us to break over 1,500 calls in a year,” Chief Carey said.

Christmas turned out to be far from peaceful for volunteer members of the Dover Fire Department, as emergencies kept them away from their families. Firefighters from the state capital responded to 18 calls for service that day, which consisted of fire alarms, broken pipes and burned holiday dinners.

Public gets first look at Milford Middle School renovation project

Members of the public got their first look at what a renovated Milford Middle School might look like Jan. 4. Milfordians gathered that evening at Mispillion Elementary School for a presentation from school district officials and employees of the firm Buck Simpers Architect + Associates. The plan, as it stands, calls for preserving and renovating the entrance and nearby academic wing in addition to the gym, while demolishing most of the rest to build new facilities. The district intends for the school to host 1,000 students — fifth graders from the three area elementary schools and sixth graders from Milford Central Academy — after it opens.

  • Beautiful. — Naye Williams
  • The school is needed. Glad they didn’t sell off the land. Fantastic addition to the Milford education program. — Vincent J. Deskiewicz Sr.
  • Good. Hopefully, with spreading the population across the two schools, there can be more attention to rule enforcement and discipline. Kids are running rampant, it seems. — Friday Nichole
  • Looks beautiful. — Justine Hadden
  • So, according to what it’s saying, they’re building this school for only two grades. — Juan Perez
