Speak Up: Delaware school districts make plans for full reopening

Posted

As summer winds down, Delaware school districts are making plans for a full return to in-person learning. An indoor mask requirement for everyone kindergarten-age and older in K-12 schools and child care centers is in effect, regardless of vaccination status. This requirement, announced by Gov. John Carney, covers both public and private schools.

  • If you can shop at Walmart, you can teach in a classroom! — Howard Gaines III
  • No, no, no, not again. Shh. — Patricia Lodholz
  • If you can buy a gun at Walmart, you can get the COVID shot at Walmart. — Gary Greer
  • And parents make plans for how to pull their children out of public school. — Beth Gallagher
  • Doesn’t matter. There won’t be enough parents pulling their kids out to close down the schools. So those kids that go to school will get vaccinated, and they will wear masks and will get their education. In the meantime, those parents who do pull their kids out of school will either have to send them to private schools, which will be too costly for many, or they will home-school them, which, with all the costs to stay within regulations, material and the like, will be quite expensive, too. If you read any of the comments on here last year, you’ll find that many of the same people who are upset about the vaccine and the masks are the same people who were crying about schools opening last year because they had to get back to work and didn’t have time to home-school. So I doubt they will be pulling their kids out of school. But maybe it would be best to pull them out in the interest of public safety. — Gary Greer
  • Nice opinion for someone that clearly does not have school-aged children. — Beth Gallagher
  • Oh, but I do have a school-aged child. I have a stepson in ninth grade, so how do you like me now? By the way, that is not an opinion, it is a fact. Most people in Delaware can’t afford to pull their kids out of public school, nor do they have the credentials, time or money it takes to home-school them. Your idle threat to take kids out of public school is futile. In fact, if you take your children out of school and don’t plan to pay for private school or you don’t have the necessities to home-school them, you could actually be creating a big problem for yourself. Delaware law requires children between the ages of 5 and 16 to attend school, which may include home school or other nonpublic options. Parents who do not comply with Delaware’s compulsory-education laws may be subject to discipline. — Gary Greer
  • I was happy they closed the schools last year. My kids were definitely safer at home than in school. School called almost every day last year, stating there was another positive case, and that was without the delta variant roaming around. Now, the delta is here, which is far more transmitted then the original strain, and they want to send our kids back with no option. Like I already stated, I hope they have enough truancy seats because there is going to be a lot of parents there, and some of us can do home schooling successfully. — Jessica Middleton
  • Maybe we need to do a stance for our kids to have a choice, and if you want to send your child, then do it. But we should have an option. — Jessica Middleton
  • I totally agree this is unfair and not safe. — Ash Badandboujee

• Maybe I need to run for governor of Delaware, so that way we can get some common sense into the board of education people.— Jessica Middle
