A proposal to provide nonresident owners of public entities a vote in Seaford’s municipal elections failed in the House of Representatives after extensive negotiations June 29.
As a result of the bill’s failure, House Republicans abstained from voting on several pieces of legislation, including the $1.4 billion fiscal year 2024 bond bill for capital project funding.
The bond bill’s defeat was a sign of retribution from House Republicans for not passing the municipal charter amendment.
Editor’s note: The Seaford charter change did pass the House following extensive negotiations by House Republicans. Lawmakers agreed to prioritize passage of HB 12 and several other bills, and the bond bill was unanimously passed.
