Speak Up: Delaware governor signs gun bills introduced after mass shootings

Posted

Gov. John Carney signed six gun bills into law June 30 that strictly limit the kind of firearms available for purchase in Delaware and raises the age of those who can use them. In doing so, the governor fulfilled a promise he and lawmakers made to tighten gun regulations in the aftermath of back-to-back mass shootings that managed to shock a nation long plagued by such bloodshed, such as the one at a Texas elementary school, where 19 students and two teachers were killed. “Today, we follow through on the action that has been demanded by the people that we work for and people that we represent,” said Gov. Carney at a signing ceremony in Legislative Hall.

  • Idiocracy. — Grant Jones
  • All of those new laws were invalidated by the U.S. Supreme Court in decisions released last Thursday or this morning. Our governor is irrelevant. — Mark Blair
  • Nope, handed back to state jurisdictions. — Meredith Gallagher
  • With instructions to revisit the previous decisions of the district court and the appellate court, and align them with the decision of the Supreme Court. The writing is on the wall. — Mark Blair
  • Now, we go to court. — Bob Hice
  • The Democrat legislative majority has created an interesting and expensive paradox, wherein Delaware citizens must raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight these unconstitutional and misguided new laws. Those same Delaware citizens must also pay for the state to defend these same laws in court. One day, we’ll have a sober and contemplative elected legislature that understands its nation’s and state’s founding documents. For now, we have ideological hooligans mostly. — Matt Bucher
  • No, we won’t. This is a blue state. Not a regressive, backwards red state. I suggest you move to Mississippi. — Meredith Gallagher
  • Your position is Delaware will never have a sober and contemplative elected legislature that understands its nation’s and state’s founding documents, and we’ll always be run by ideological hooligans? Very telling. Meanwhile, I’ll probably be able to save gas money and tire wear to Mississippi because, with the stagnant wages, inflation, corroding educational statistics and industries fleeing the state, your ideological bedfellows, the Democrats, are hellbent on bringing Mississippi here. — Matt Bucher
  • You may not like it, but Delaware is part of the United States and must follow the Constitution. In fact, every politician is sworn in with the oath of office to uphold and obey the Constitution of the United States and the state of Delaware. — Mark Blair
  • Has nothing to do with “gun safety.” It violates the Second Amendment, period. — Howard Gaines III
