After an hour of heavy opposition to a bill that would have required student-athletes to play on a team dictated by their gender identified at birth, the legislation is likely to die after Wednesday’s House of Representatives’ Health & Social Services Committee meeting. Senate Bill 227, the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, will likely not be let out of committee, according to the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Bryant Richardson, R-Seaford.
- So both “sides’” rights are being infringed upon. I agree with the part on providing solutions to all problems, not just one side. Provide girls with more monetary resources and weight room capabilities. Come on, that is not a solution! — Beth Reed Jacobs
- How many student-athletes in Delaware are actually transgender? — Dale Bert
- Very good question, but the number doesn’t have anything to do with the proposed bill. Females compete with females and males with males. — Dean Mills
- Sure it has to do with this. If there’s like one kid in all of Delaware who is doing this, is it really something that needs to be legislated? Is this a “solution” looking for a problem? Aren’t the Republicans the ones who want less government telling us how to live our lives and have less regulations? — Dale Bert
- It’s not a problem until that “one” athlete ruins your daughter’s chance to win a championship. One athlete, 300 athletes, doesn’t matter. It’s wrong. — Sonja Glenn Bochow
- A third league where these kids can sign up for a mixed league. Where they know and agree before the season. Let the parents/students decide where they want to play. — Pete Miller
