Speak Up: Are you prepared for emergencies?

Posted

If you live in Delaware, you may not be far from a railroad track. After the recent fiery derailment of a train carrying toxic chemicals in Ohio, local officials and agencies here have worked to respond to concern from citizens. Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen pointed out there is “an emergency operating plan in Delaware and one in the city that is updated every year.” Are you close to a railway? What’s your plan in case of an emergency?

  • I live close to tracks that haul nothing but freight. Thought about derailments often. I worked on the railroad for a few years and saw enough problems. If a derailment happens, and they say evacuate, I’m not wasting any time. Pack up the car quickly and get out. — Vincent J. Deskiewicz Sr.
  • Yes, I agree with the prior writer. — Ruth Hamilton
  • It is the disaster you are not prepared for, or don’t realize can be a disaster, that create the problems. — Bob Hice
