Smyth: Is it time for Joe Biden to come home?

Posted

Many Delawareans were thrilled when favorite son Joe Biden became the First State’s first U.S. president.

But is it time now for his friends and supporters in Delaware to urge Joe to come home?

One recent poll shows that only 24% of Americans want President Biden to run again, and only 30% want former President Donald Trump on the ballot.

But even more concerning is another poll that indicates that, if Biden and Trump are the candidates, they’d run nearly dead even, with 40% for Trump, 39% for Biden and 17% undecided. In other words, if Joe runs for reelection next year, this nation could be facing another four years of Donald Trump as our president. Yikes!

Even if Joe were to win, he’d be 86 years old by the end of his second term. And he’s already clearly not as sharp as he once was. Trump would be 82, which would likely make him even more erratic than he has always been.

Isn’t it time for Joe to graciously announce that he’s not going to run for reelection in 2024?

Doing so would allow the Democrats to nominate a younger and more vibrant candidate who could decisively defeat Trump in 2024.

And President Biden could gracefully come back to Delaware at the end of his term in early 2025, for a well-deserved retirement among his friends and neighbors.
