DOVER — A 19-year-old Smyrna High School student died after suffering a single gunshot wound Wednesday night in the Walker Woods residential development, Dover Police Department said.

Gary Adams, of Smyrna, was located on Harmony Lane in the back of the development after police received a call at 8:55 p.m.

The caller reported a gunshot sound and a male seen lying on the ground, authorities said.

Officers arrived within two minutes of the call and began first aid efforts, said spokesman Cpl. Mark Hoffman.

Mr. Adams was transported to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover, where he was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m. due to his injuries, police said. Authorities would not disclose where the wound was located.

Witness and/or resident interviews were conducted, police said.

It was the city of Dover’s fourth homicide in 2015, and third within the past 18 days, which authorities find troubling. The commonality to all of the incidents was the use of a firearm, police said. One homicide has been solved, and suspects are sought in the other three.

“It is very concerning, especially when the city had this amount in all of 2014, and even less in years prior,” Cpl. Hoffman said. “The department continues to look at ways to combat violence, including adding more officers to the force.”

Dover police officers were at the homicide scene and “most, if not all officers cleared the scene by 12:30 a.m. (Thursday),” Cpl. Hoffman said.

During the investigation, police found Mr. Adams was enrolled at Smyrna High. School administrators were contacted and will have crisis counselors available for those in need, Dover police said.

Also, the Smyrna Police Department was notified and was in constant communication with Smyrna school officials.

On Thursday morning, Smyrna School District officials declined comment, citing an ongoing response to supporting student needs.

Smyrna police spokesman Cpl. Brandon Dunning said authorities notified the school district of the incident Thursday morning.

“At this time we have no active involvement in the Dover police investigation and are providing support as needed to the Smyrna School District in dealing with this tragic loss,” Cpl. Dunning said.

Police would not comment on whether Mr. Adams was connected to anyone at Walker Woods or why he was believed to be there.

“We cannot disclose those details at this time as they are sensitive to the ongoing investigation,” Cpl. Hoffman said.

Police detectives are working on numerous leads, Cpl. Hoffman said Thursday morning after the homicide was announced via a news release, but would not provide any further information.

Three other homicides

• On Thursday, April 30, two Dover men were arrested within hours after investigation into a shooting in the Pine Grove Apartments parking lot that left 19-year-old DaShawn Friend dead earlier in the day, authorities said.

Fchante Robertson, 27, listed as homeless in a police news release, was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy, second-degree possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by person prohibited, possession of ammunition by person prohibited, and resisting arrest.

James White, 30, of the unit block of Salisbury Road, was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy, possession of a deadly weapon during commission of a felony, possession of firearm by person prohibited, and possession of ammunition by person prohibited.

• Investigation continues into the April 26 shooting death of 29-year-old David L. Clark in the area of the unit block of North New Street. According to police, witnesses heard a single gunshot at approximately 3:54 a.m. and Mr. Clark’s body was seen lying on the ground a short time later.

• On the morning of Jan. 25, police responded to a report of a body lying next to the railroad tracks south of Walker Road near the City of Dover warehouse.

Officers located the body of Jordan M. Peck, 18, of Dover.

Police described the death at the time as suspicious, and later confirmed it was a homicide. One person of interest was questioned in the immediate aftermath, authorities said.
