I agree with Tim Slavin’s Opinion about restoring Fort DuPont and Fort Miles, so future generations can learn of Delaware’s role in World War II (“Preservation Month and the promise of Fort DuPont”). Being a history nut, I have gone to Fort DuPont numerous times to look at the old buildings and just imagine what it was like in those days. The soldiers walking around, going to the theater, which is still on the grounds. The German prisoners who were held there. A lot of history there.
What I hated to see was the high-end homes and town houses being developed within sight of these historical buildings. In the meantime, there has been very little restoration on these buildings. I don’t know of any plans for Fort DuPont and the Gov. Bacon buildings, but I hope the state will help Mr. Slavin and his group preserve this piece of history in our state.
I would like to see a museum on the grounds. Maybe turn the existing movie theater into a modern one. Thank you, Mr. Slavin, and good luck preserving this historical gem.
