Sipple: Delaware sales tax may be inevitable

Posted

While Delaware has been fortunate not to have a sales tax, it does have a higher income tax because of that. What has always bothered me is that Delaware residents bear the burden of this high tax, while millions of tourists come to our state and essentially get free rides.

People will say that no sales tax is why they come to Delaware. But is that really the reason? I don’t think it’s a deciding factor when the argument begins about where to go on vacation. So, I think maybe a sales tax may be the best way to get the tourists to pay their share.

The revenue raised, of course, will lower Delaware income tax rates. But maybe a portion of it can go to a program that is needed in Delaware, like health care for older adults or help with child care costs — something that will help Delaware residents directly.

I think a sales tax is inevitable, but let’s make it as painless as possible for residents.
