Roundup: Indian River's Lydic, Caesar Rodney take Henlopen golf titles; Wilm. drops opener

REHOBOTH — Indian River High’s Sarah Lydic won the individual title with Caesar Rodney winning the team crown at the Henlopen Conference golf championships on Monday.

Lydic, a senior, fired a three-under par 68 in the one-day tournament played at Kings Creek Country Club.

CR’s Gavin Garrison placed second with a 72 while Sussex Central’s Jake Hollerback, CR’s Reagan Garnsey and Polytech’s Kylie Yiengst all tied for third with 75s.

The Riders carded a team score of 304, followed by Polytech (318) and Sussex Academy (329).

The DIAA state tournament will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday

DIAA Roberts scholarship winners: The DIAA has announced the winners of its Harry Roberts-Senior Scholar Athlete awards.

The award, named for the late Caesar Rodney superintendent, goes to seniors who have earned at least two varsity letters in two different sports. Students must apply for the award and write an essay.

This year’s female winners were: First-Megann Dombchik, Concord; Second-Elizabeth Dill, Dover; and Third-Addison Kennedy, Newark Charter.

The male winners were: First-Krish Shjpaul, Newark Charter; Second-Patrick Craig, Caeasar Rodney; and Third-Samuel Felice, Salesianum.

College softball

Western Washington 2, Wilmington 1: The big hit eluded the third-seeded Wildcats as they dropped their opener in the NCAA Division II World Series on Sunday in Longwood, Fla.

Wilmington (45-15) will try to avoid elimination when it faces No. 7 Augustana (S.D.) on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Lexi Moore went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases while fellow Smyrna High grad Julia Thuer picked up two hits.

All three runs were scored in the third inning with Western Washington (49-9) scoring twice in the top of the inning and the Wildcats answering with one in the bottom of the frame.

Wilmington collected 10 hits and had the bases loaded in the third and sixth innings but could only bring home the one run,

Emma Zimmerman started the bottom of the third with a double and Thuer followed with a single . Moore reached with one out to load the bases but then a strikeout let Wilmington with two outs.

Sara Miller (Smyrna) laced a ball back up the middle, but the pitcher got a glove on it to knock it down. Miller beat out the play at first to bring in Bella Eleazar, but the trailing runner, Cassidy Zelano, was gunned down at the plate trying to sneak home.
