There was a recent article, composed by Joseph Edelen, regarding a huge need in our state (“Bill to establish new Delaware Department of Veterans Affairs sails through House committee”). Veterans from all military services are flocking into this state in droves, especially in Sussex County, and I am one of them.
The low taxes and temperate climate, as well as Dover Air Force Base, the services the base provides, an open job market and opportunities to engage in our political arena make this a perfect place to retire, and here, they do.
This population is largely served by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for medical care, which takes the financial burden off of Social Security and keeps our heroes healthy, as well as community-focused.
These men and women who “paid it forward” continue to work and engage in bettering everything for everyone; it seems just to be in their DNA.
House Bill 1 has been knocking around for a while, only brought to the forefront very recently and poised for success.
Now, we have a new governor who could easily establish a cabinet position for veterans affairs, relieving the State Department of burden and helping our heroes’ functionality, thereby helping everyone in the state.
HB 1 recently cleared the first administrative step, is now in the House of Representatives’ Appropriations Committee and is moving forward to go to the Senate.
Support this legislation and write to Gov. Matt Meyer and to all your elected officials to further it.
Trust me, you will reap rewards, and the state treasury will be enhanced.
