HARRINGTON — Police are frustrated by limited cooperation from potential witnesses of a shooting that injured six people at a large house party early Sunday morning, Lt. Earl K. Brode said.

While approximately 200 to 300 people were at a 16th birthday party in the 100 block of East Street, the Harrington Police Department said few leads have been developed.

Authorities are seeking more witness information, but details are not forthcoming at this point, Lt. Brode said Monday morning.

“Nobody wants to tell us anything,” Lt. Brode said. “A lot of people were there but nobody has stepped forward with information.

“We believe somebody has to know who was involved, but nobody is talking. I don’t know if they’re scared or fear retaliation, but there hasn’t been much cooperation from witnesses as of yet.”

The six shooting victims were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening gunshot wounds, five by private vehicle and one by EMS Lt. Brode said; all were discharged by Monday morning.

Police said the birthday honoree was not involved in the shooting.

Lt. Brode said he couldn’t recall a multiple shooting in Harrington, “especially one where so many people were involved.”

The shooting was reported with a 911 call at approximately 1 a.m., and Harrington police responded along with the Delaware State Police, Felton Police Department and an officer from the state’s Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement, Lt. Brode said.

Milford Police and State Police assisted at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital until Harrington officers arrived, Lt. Brode said.

Authorities described the initial scene as “chaotic.” Officers investigated at the location until about 3 a.m., and resumed the next day. Lt. Brode said Harrington Police would keep working the case until locating whoever is responsible.

“A couple people came forward and we’re trying to work the leads from them,” he said.

A bullet fragment from a handgun was located, police said. No property damage resulted from the shooting.

While no definitive reason has been determined on what sparked the shooting, police believe a fight was about to erupt at the time of gunshots. Lt. Brode said it was undetermined how many weapons were involved.

A search for more witnesses continued on Monday, Lt. Brode said.

Police described investigation as in the preliminary stage with no suspects identified.
