Nieli: Families worry about assisted living community

Posted

Families place enormous trust and financial burden on assisted living communities, expecting that their loved ones will receive competent care, dignity, and the respect they deserve. Sadly, our experience at Harmony at Kent has been one of chronic dysfunction, poor communication, and a stunning lack of accountability.

Executive leadership turnover has been constant. Repeated concerns have been met with silence. Even basic tasks, such as accurate menus, activity calendars, laundry, meal orders, and communication with families, have become recurring failures rather than routine expectations.

Most disturbing of all have been serious concerns involving resident privacy, confidentiality and exploitation. There is nothing more personal or vulnerable than one's health and bodily privacy, yet we have been left questioning whether those most fundamental rights are being treated with the gravity they deserve. Once trust in the protection of a resident's privacy is breached, it cannot simply be restored with excuses or indifference. And allowing outside vendors to solicit business from elderly residents raises troubling questions about exploitation and whose interests are truly being protected.

Meanwhile, residents and their families are paying premium prices while being greeted by filthy conditions, deteriorating common areas, and staff who often appear inadequately trained, overwhelmed, or poorly supervised. The result is an environment where mistakes are normalized, concerns go unanswered, and accountability appears nonexistent.

Then there are the language barriers and cultural differences among some staff, which can present challenges when communication is already lacking, making compassionate and effective care all the more difficult.

No one expects perfection; but when leadership refuses to communicate and serious concerns involving resident rights, dignity and confidentiality are met with silence, families are left to wonder whether the people entrusted with caring for our seniors understand the magnitude of that responsibility at all.

Our elderly parents deserve more than excuses and indifference.  Behind the smiles and assurances, families should insist on transparency, accountability, and proof that a facility's actions match its promises before entrusting their loved ones, and their life savings, to its care. Sadly, we have found a facility where accountability seems to disappear as quickly as the revolving door of leadership.
