Newark man arrested for assault of 65-year-old male

NEWARK — A 23-year-old male, of Newark, was arrested after he assaulted a 69-year-old man and resisted arrest Monday, Delaware State Police said Wednesday.

State police reported that at approximately 10:01 p.m. Monday, troopers and Newport Police Department responded to 1401 Centreville Road after receiving calls regarding a fight in a parking lot.

At the time of arrival, 23-year-old David Walker and the victim were involved in an altercation on the ground, where state police say the perpetrator attempted to steal the victim’s groceries as he waited for a

State police said the victim experienced minor injuries as a result of the physical altercation, while Mr. Walker refused to be treated for an open cut and flung his blood at the officers.

After being restrained, the perpetrator physically resisted while being handcuffed, and eventually kicked an officer in the abdomen while being placed into the patrol vehicle. The officer did not sustain any injuries from being kicked, according to state troopers.

Mr. Walker was taken to Troop 2, where he was charged with the felony second degree assault to a person over 62-years-of-age; two counts of offensive touching of law enforcement; resisting arrest; and criminal nuisance.

The perpetrator was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $6,000 cash bond.
