Newark launches super rebate program for energy efficiency

Posted

NEWARK — The city’s Conservation Advisory Commission has launched a super rebate program for residents who purchase qualified energy efficient air conditioning units.

The commission contributed $10,000 for the pilot program, with rebates providing an additional $100 to the $50 rebate provided through the city’s partnership with Efficiency Smart.

Rebates will be issued as a utility bill credit. Newark electric customers who purchase a qualifying Energy Star window air conditioning units must first submit a completed rebate form along with sales receipt to Efficiency Smart.

Following confirmation of the purchase, Efficiency Smart will inform the city. The Payment & Utility Billing Division will then confirm eligibility and apply the credit to an upcoming utility bill. Eligible customers will receive written confirmation of the super rebate and bill credit.

"These rebates are designed to help folks afford more energy-efficient equipment while also making our environment healthier. The existing rebate is generous, but for lower-income Newarkers, it didn't seem enough to put the energy efficient appliances within reach. The super-rebates will change that -- just in time for the hot summer months, when people will really rely on their ACs," said Helga Huntley, commission co-chair.

There is a limit of two $100 utility bill credits per household through Newark’s Super Rebate program. The combined rebate and utility bill credit cannot exceed the purchase price of the air conditioning unit.
