Nelson: Sussex Countians ignored with passage of SB 159

Posted

Despite its passage in the General Assembly on June 30, I strongly oppose Senate Bill 159. Not only does it revoke the rights and privileges of voters in Sussex County, but the real threat to our environment, ecology, marine life and feathered friends is enormous.

I have been attending, via Zoom, several meetings that have been conducted regarding US Wind’s offshore wind project.

Without a doubt, the public meeting by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and this recent meeting about SB 159 appeared to be more of a checkbox than truly listening to constituents. I listened to both meetings, and clearly, a large volume of speakers were against this project. There were many people, including judges and attorneys, against SB 159. Unfortunately, I believe the almighty dollar is the only consideration.

The number of developments that are happening in Delaware is ridiculous. Why not require developers to put in closed-looped geothermal systems? The biggest draw of electricity is for heating and cooling homes. Why not require this from developers? Why not require developers to install solar panels on roofs where appropriate?

Years ago, a friend of mine owned a unit in the Antigua in Ocean City, Maryland. It has a closed-loop geothermal system. It has 104 units. My friend said his electric bill was minuscule. Closed-loop geothermal systems pose no risk environmentally or ecologically. And they don’t depend on the sun or wind.

I truly hope Mr. Doug Burgum, the nation’s interior secretary, stops this outrageous project.
