ODESSA — The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle on U.S. 13 near Marl Pit Road that occurred early Saturday evening. It is the second fatality of a cyclist in Delaware in as many days.

According to police, the preliminary investigation indicates the crash occurred around 7:40 p.m. Saturday as Nicholas E. Russo, 33 of Warwick, Maryland, was operating a 2007 Honda CBR1000 motorcycle northbound on U.S. 13 in the left lane just north of Marl Pit Road with a group of other motorcycles. As the traffic crossed over Drawyer Creek, several motorcycles began splitting cars that were traveling in the same direction by passing in between them.

At the same time, police said, Mr. Russo attempted to pass a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado on the narrow left shoulder, which caused the left side of the truck to collide with the right side of the motorcycle, ejecting Mr. Russo from the motorcycle. Russo, who was wearing a helmet, then struck a guardrail and was pronounced dead at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics.

The drive of the Colorado, Michael P. Stradley, 31 of Newark, was properly restrained and able to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop on the right shoulder. He was uninjured.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the incident and according to police charges are not expected to be filed. U.S. 13’s northbound lanes were closed at Del. 299 for approximately five hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

On Friday, Tyler R. Pack, 21, of Felton, was killed when his motorcycle struck a car at the intersection of Del. 10 and U.S. 113 in Dover. The police’s reconstruction unit continues to investigate that accident, according to a Saturday statement issued by the state police.
