NEW CASTLE — A 28-year-old man died after being shot by Delaware State Police troopers during an attempt to take him into custody Thursday, authorities said in a news release.

At approximately 7:22 a.m., detectives from the New Castle County Governor’s Task Force and the Special Operations Response Team responded to Lowe’s, 2225 Hessler Blvd., in response to a report about a known fugitive shoplifting there, police said.

Upon arrival, detectives saw the man fleeing from the store with a shopping cart full of merchandise, they added.

Troopers attempted to contact him, but he began running away, the news release stated. He got into a car behind the business and struck an unmarked state police vehicle, while attempting to leave, police said.

While trying to take the suspect into custody, he did not comply with commands to stop and physically resisted when troopers tried to remove him from the car, authorities said.

The release went on to state that troopers shot the man as he continued to drive in a manner that placed them in imminent danger. The officers subsequently rendered first aid until the man was transported by emergency medical services to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Two troopers were also taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of kin.

Per state police procedures, the troopers involved will be on administrative leave, while an investigation is conducted regarding the use of force.
