Hunters are excited — I can tell from all the guns going off out in the woods yesterday. Have fun boys, I’m going to the beach — it is too hot. The ticks and chiggers are going to eat those hunters alive. I can’t stand chemicals so I skip using anything to keep those off and just avoid tall grass, and the woods, and sometimes just the outdoors in general. Especially this time of year. I mow the grass every three days or the yard is no fun to walk through. Country living as such. The HOA places nuke everything in their yards.
The sure sign summer is ending, sunsets at The Point. The Point is open to surf fish! Now if we can just get some fish to catch that would be great. The drama persists though. Anglers at The Point every year have to deal with boaters who get too close to the beach because it is so deep off the beach. All summer no humans have been on The Point. The boaters get used to running it close and fishing in close. When it opens we have lines out to the edge of that drop off. The boats come in close. This usually ends up with the boat’s prop winding up a hundred yards of line. Braid will destroy a prop.
Also just a heads up, but casting at a boat on purpose is very illegal. There have been cases where an angler casting at a boat was arrested for assault. A lead weight when cast, especially with a long surf rod, is going extremely fast. Like a bullet. Be safe and smart out there. Boaters, you have an entire bay, no need to run the line of The Point beaches when people are fishing. We also get to start up our game of how many people will park their boat on the beach today and then tell us it is okay we are local. Last year we had 11 in one day. No point in calling them in it seems to never do anything.
It is still summer fishing fun and pompano have shown up. Not in huge numbers but they are around. This time of year is my favorite time to surf fish at night. Nothing like the beach at night and as far away as you can get from civilization. Fishing is good too. You shark anglers should fish at night and then everyone would leave you alone.
The flounder action has been the usual around all the waterways. Some tog action at the inlets. Picking through a lot of short fish for that one keeper.
Lot of fishery meetings coming up that anglers should pay attention and definitely send in comments.
My favorite way to fish The Point is when no one is around so you can fish the end of the point and drift the edge all the way around. From one side to the other. The gear never hits the bottom; the current is too fast. A four-to-six-ounce weight keeps the line down deeper but the weight never hits bottom. We do this on purpose and walk our lines around The Point. We call it drifting The Point. The idea is to use the current to “drift” your bait and get it to come around that shoal edge. Right into the predators waiting on the other side for food. Back in the day a spot live lined like this would catch huge weakfish. The big tide runners. We only do this on weekdays when no one is out there and it is best on an outgoing tide.
Striped bass is open again in the Chesapeake Bay — from Maryland DNR — “Striped Bass Season Reminder: All areas of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries are open to recreational striped bass fishing from September 1 to December 5. Anglers may keep 1 fish per person, per day, with a minimum length of 19 inches and a maximum length of 24 inches.”
Fishing is still typical for this time of year in Delmarva. Get out and enjoy yourself. You never know what you will catch.
