Letter to the Editor: Writer says GOP is a ‘party of death’

Posted

It is said that the national Republican Party has become a party that simply opposes ideas, while proposing no ideas to govern.

This is not true. The Republican Party’s positions and ideas about governing are very clear. It is the party of death. Their killing platform includes:

  • Opposing masks and vaccines in the face of more than 1 million U.S. COVID-19 deaths.
  • Opposing most efforts to regulate guns, despite more than 45,000 deaths by gun in the U.S in 2020 and despite the fact that death by gun has become a leading cause of death for children in the U.S.
  • Opposing efforts to support heath care, leading to an uninsured U.S. population of more than 30 million, causing more than 18,000 persons to die each year due to lack of proper health care.
  • Denying a woman’s right to control their own body and physicians’ ability to properly care for their patients, guaranteeing unnecessary death to thousands of women.
  • Eliminating the child tax care credit, plunging 3.7 million children back into poverty and conditions of poor health at a time of skyrocketing food costs.
  • Denying the need to act to control deadly climate change, leading to unprecedented storms, fires, heat and extinctions.
  • Failing to condemn hatred-spewing White nationalists, while such groups inflict daily terror on women, Jews, Muslims, immigrants, the LBGTQ community, election officials and all persons of color.

The arguments in support of these platform planks are camouflaged with seemingly bloodless logic about the need to control the budget deficit or protect the ability of business to make a profit or protect state’s rights against federal encroachment. These arguments are a lie. These arguments are about life and death and the naked pursuit of power.

Elections matter. The party of death’s platform must be stopped.

If you oppose these policies, get out of the stands and onto the field to work for their defeat. Vote. Sign up to be a poll worker. Contribute to and work for candidates in Delaware and in other states who share your beliefs. Take a stand against death.
