Letter-writer Frederick Longacre assigns incorrect goals and beliefs to Republicans (“GOP behavior makes one wonder, so be sure to vote,” June 6).
The GOP certainly does not “resent” all persons being equal in rights, including to existing social programs. What most Republicans want for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid is changes to the funding and benefit programs, so that they don’t become insolvent (Medicare hospital insurance in 2028, Social Security in 2034). Politicians in D.C. have ignored that elephant in the room for decades. The Affordable Care Act is not favored by many, and whether it is the best system is debatable, but, in any event, I know of no one who objects to everyone being entitled to its benefits.
A vast majority of Americans of all stripes agree that abortion rights should be subject to some restrictions. And where’s the evidence that Republicans are less active (“AWOL”) in providing children’s services than others?
The “voter-suppression” canard doesn’t deserve comment. I find Georgia voting rules, vilified by Democrats, are, in many ways, less restrictive than those of Delaware.
When will we stop demonizing those with whom we disagree and misrepresenting their beliefs?
