Letter to the Editor: Who does Rep. Blunt Rochester represent?

Posted

Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del., has been serving in Congress since 2017. An internet search on Propublica shows that Rep. Blunt Rochester voted with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., 96% of the time in the 115th Congress (2017-18); 100% of the time with Speaker Pelosi in the 116th Congress (2019-20); and 100% of the time with the speaker in the 117th Congress (2021-22).

A person would wonder how and why a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware would vote exactly the same as the speaker, who is from California. The needs of Delaware would seem to be a little, if not a lot, different than the needs of California. While someone could argue that people from the same political party would have similar interests and values, would an person expect it to be 100% of the time?

Do Californians, who have some of the most restrictive gun laws, have the same interest in Second Amendment rights as the people of Delaware? Do California residents feel the same as Delawareans on issues such as voter ID laws, abolishing the Electoral College (which was designed to protect small states like Delaware), inflation, the fentanyl crisis, COVID-19 restrictions and many other issues facing the nation today? There is a reason our government was set up with representatives from each state.

There is an old saying, “Follow the money.” A simple lookup from the Federal Election Commission (FEC), which is public information, shows that Rep. Blunt Rochester gets the many of her campaign contributions from out of state and political action committees (PACs). Why would someone send a political contribution to someone in another state?

Can anyone honestly believe that Rep. Blunt Rochester is voting on what is best for Delaware, instead of what these special-interest groups and Nancy Pelosi want? Why would these groups would continue to donate to Rep. Blunt Rochester and increase donations through the years? Are they getting something in return? Maybe this is why prescription prices are so high and inflation is running rampant, with everything more expensive from food to fuel.

Again, I have to ask, who is Rep. Blunt Rochester representing: the residents of Delaware or the special interests she gets campaign contributions from? Please do your own research before you vote. Using the internet, it is pretty easy now.

Rep. Blunt Rochester should not be voting for bills that she, special interests or Nancy Pelosi want; she should be voting for bills that would improve the life of the citizens of Delaware. Why would Delaware want someone in Congress who blindly votes the way Nancy Pelosi does, instead of voting for what is best for Delaware and the country as a whole?
