Letter to the Editor: Sweeney endorses sheriff, recorder of deed candidates

Posted

As a Kent County Levy Court commissioner, I am committed to keeping Kent County property taxes as low as possible. Two of the row offices that contribute to expenses and revenue are the Sheriff’s Office and the Recorder of Deeds Office.

The candidate for sheriff is our current sheriff, Brian Lewis. I consider Brian one of the most responsible sheriffs in recent history. Sheriff Lewis and his staff are often called on for tasks that are very unappealing, like selling the home of someone who has not been able to meet their financial commitments. Sheriff Lewis has been adamant about the respect and sincerity that he and his staff use to handle this task. Kent County depends on someone who understands the plight of those impacted and has the heart to be sympathetic to their constituents. That person is Sheriff Brian Lewis.

Another row office that is critical to Kent County and those of us who live here is the recorder of deeds. The recorder of deeds ensures that records of your home purchase and covenants, if you live in a subdivision, are maintained and accessible. The office will maintain any land purchase records, and I have often instructed people to record even the slightest of land purchases, such as a future burial plot. Cemetery records can be lost or destroyed, leaving someone to guess what plots belong to who. The candidate for that office is D.J. Cox. He lives in a subdivision, is faced with the same issues as many homeowners, understands the value of the home the family purchased and will work hard to protect that asset.

Join me in supporting D.J. Cox for recorder of deeds and Brian Lewis for sheriff. Kent County needs them.

Kent County Levy Court District 5 commissioner
