Following a tumultuous election season, many of us who are truly committed to defending democracy are looking to expand access to the ballot and address the challenges vulnerable communities faced in casting their votes this past year. Conversely, others are seeking to limit participation. While Delaware is moving forward with critical reforms in Dover, threats to democracy in state legislatures across the country abound.
Delaware is currently set to begin automatic voter registration and further broaden early voting ahead of the next cycle, and we’re pushing forward with important policies that would make mail-in voting permanent. Meanwhile, some states are pursuing policies that restrict participation through a host of subversive — and frankly, racist — proposals.
Thankfully, conversations around the For the People Act are continuing in Washington.
We’re thankful to have leaders in Washington — from President Joe Biden to our congressional delegation in Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons and Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, all D-Del. — who recognize the importance of this legislation and have proven true champions as the debate has unfolded so far. We’re at a critical junction in our democracy, as conversations around voting and campaign finance reform continue here in Delaware and in Washington. Let’s continue to ask our leaders in Dover and D.C. to defend voting access and to clean up our campaign finance system.
Rep. Paul Baumbach, D-Newark
