Letter to the Editor: Ships transporting EVs are also polluting our environment

Posted

A recent letter about electric vehicles was very well written (“One way to show patriotism: Drive an electric vehicle,” July 14). I would like to add one fact that clean-air-minded readers should know.

When electric vehicles are shipped from China, Japan or South Korea, there is additional pollution generated by the dirty, bunker oil-burning ships that bring them to our shores. It has been estimated that the amount of air pollution generated by one of these ships divided by their full cargo of the number of cars the size of a Toyota Prius can equal as much as 150 years’ worth of car air pollution for each car. No electric vehicle can compensate for that amount of air pollution, unless it lasts well over 150 years.
