Letter to the Editor: Remember these resources as we mark Older Americans Month

Posted

Older Americans Month is a time to celebrate older Americans, their stories and their contributions.

Led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), this annual observance offers a special opportunity to learn about, support and recognize our nation’s older citizens.

This year’s theme, “Age My Way,” is an opportunity for Delawareans to explore the many ways older adults can remain in and be involved within their communities.

The Delaware Nursing Home Residents Quality Assurance Commission and the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services encourage organizations to assist older adults in the community to help redefine aging — through work or family interests by taking charge of their health and staying independent for as long as possible, and through community and advocacy efforts.

Throughout the month of May, we encourage organizations in Delaware to conduct meaningful activities designed to highlight valuable information of interest to older adults and their families.

If you have a loved one in a Delaware long-term care facility and are concerned about the quality of care or services, please let us know! We would love to help or connect you with others to provide assistance.

Additionally, DHSS’ Division of Health Care Quality (DHCO) and Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program (LTCOP) are other resources for Delaware families or residents receiving long-term care facility services.

The Division of Health Care Quality investigates incidents and complaints pertaining to possible abuse, neglect, mistreatment and/or financial exploitation of residents in long-term care facilities. In turn, they analyze each report and determine what follow-up action is appropriate.

To report an incident or complaint of alleged abuse, neglect, mistreatment and/or financial exploitation of a resident in a Delaware long-term care facility, please contact the 24-hour complaint and incident reporting line at 877-453-0012 or access a complaint form at dhss.delaware.gov/dhss/dhcq/mailform.html.

Delaware’s Long Term Care Ombudsman Program advocates for residents who live in long-term care facility settings or receive home and community-based services. For assistance, call 800-223-9074 or email delawareadrc@delaware.gov.
