Letter to the Editor: Reader says FBI numbers show non-firearm deaths are not rare

Posted

I read a recent Letter to the Editor stating that “deaths caused by using a device other than a gun are rare” (“Learn more about ghost guns before advocating for them,” Oct. 14). The writer challenged anyone to prove him wrong. I went to the FBI website and found as an example the 2019 “Crime in the United States” report’s Expanded Homicide Data Table 8, detailing murder victims by weapon.

In 2019, the FBI reports that there were 13,927 homicides in the U.S. — 10,258 by firearms and 3,669 by other weapons, most notably, knives, blunt instruments and personal weapons (hands and feet).

I don’t consider almost 4,000 deaths to be rare occurrences.
