Letter to the Editor: Outgoing 20th District representative shares his endorsement

Posted

When I chose to seek an opportunity to serve our community in the state Senate, I made the decision in no small part because I knew Dallas Wingate would be a candidate to replace me in the 20th District.

In Dallas, I see a man of rare skills and accomplishment but who humbly views himself as a public servant.

Dallas Wingate has a long history of dedicating himself to furthering the public good. A former Delaware National Guard colonel with 37 years of military service, Dallas Wingate also spent a career with the U.S. Department of Defense.

As a Guard officer, he brought together state and federal disaster-relief agencies and local first responders to meet Delaware’s most pressing emergencies. That is no small task, and he successfully accomplished it on dozens of occasions.

Having served with Dallas Wingate, I got a firsthand look at his calm demeanor and poise under the most trying of circumstances. Despite often being under immense pressure, I saw him treat everyone around him with patience, respect and understanding.

Perhaps his best qualification to be our next state representative is not that he is skilled and highly educated, but rather that he is a genuinely good man driven to help people. When most in his situation would embrace enjoying their well-earned retirement, Dallas is seeking to continue his long tenure of selfless public service.

I can think of no one I would rather have replace me in the state House of Representatives than Dallas Wingate, and I respectfully ask the citizens of the 20th District that supported me over the past decade to similarly place their faith in him.

On Nov. 8, please make an investment in the future of our community by casting a vote for Dallas Wingate for state representative in the 20th District.

Rep. Steve Smyk, R-Milton
