Letter to the Editor: Our democracy is in trouble

Posted

The Republican strategy is now clear. Declare that you won by a landslide but that your victory was stolen. Then, declare that you are fixing things so that such a theft can never happen again. This fix, predictable enough, is to make it much harder for your opponents to vote. It’s like you guarantee a win in football by making sure the other team cannot show up.

This is not only crazy, but it shows an absolute contempt for democracy. We in the Democratic Party and those few remaining moderates in the Republican Party must do everything possible to prevent this strategy from succeeding.

We have only a small window of opportunity: from now until the end of July, when the House goes on a monthlong recess.

During this roughly two-month window, we have one tremendous task to perform: Remove the filibuster. Until this is done, the For the People Act, a cure for the above Republican craziness, cannot be passed. Even then, there are at least two Democratic senators standing in the way: Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. It is high time for us to stand up and be counted. Write letters, make phone calls, join activist groups like Indivisible and attend protests.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.
