I’m a lifelong Delawarean and am tired of hearing what has been years and years of newspaper articles and online and TV stories about waste, fraud, abuse, mismanagement and corruption in state and local government.
The latest is Kathy McGuiness, the state auditor, on trial. It’s a disgrace that the state auditor, of all people, is on trial for fraud and misdemeanor charges. I think I speak for a lot of other Delawareans who are sick and tired of suspicious state land deals and government contracts, agency officials not doing their jobs, companies with public contracts getting away with not providing services to taxpayers and other problems.
These issues are exactly why we need a statewide Office of the Inspector General. An inspector general can come in and start cleaning up things.
It looked like the General Assembly was ready to finally pass House Bill 405 to create the office. But all of a sudden, it’s going nowhere. I don’t understand why. What’s going on? The General Assembly needs to get its act together and pass the law, so we can finally hold government officials and agencies accountable.
