I’m trying to understand something.
When a majority of Americans, of all stripes, want to get money out of politics, maximize the number of people voting and end gerrymandering, why are the Republicans in Congress doing all they can to block legislation to do this? Are they actually in favor of bribery, voter suppression and rigging elections? I don’t really think so.
Since the Republicans in Congress are claiming that it is the Democrats who are corrupt, power-grabbing and unresponsive to the will of the people, I suggest an action they can take to fix this problem: Pass the For the People Act.
This bill is currently being filibustered by Senate Republicans, so I am convinced that they don’t understand how it will benefit conservatives. Therefore, I’m going to spell it out for them.
The For the People Act will help stop the flow of millions of dollars of dark money that support Democratic politicians. It would end the ability of Democratic-controlled state legislatures to secretly gerrymander election districts. It would prevent a Democratic president from hiding his/her tax returns.
If the For the People Act is passed, Delaware’s own Democratic U.S. senators, Chris Coons and Tom Carper, would have to give up any chance of large corporations secretly funding their reelection campaigns. They would have to come to everyday people for support.
Most of us want this. And we are willing to fix the filibuster to accomplish it. Will you join us and act now?
