Letter to the Editor: Marvel family member says flag diminishes museum’s happy memories

Posted

Has anyone on the Town Council or the historical society ever asked the heirs of Nutter D. Marvel what they believe their grandfather would think about the Confederate flag flying on his property that he created as a carriage museum for everyone to enjoy?

I think not, and I doubt that Nutter D. Marvel Sr. would approve of what has become of his legacy that he was so proud to display.

This flag and so-called monument was put up after the historical society obtained possession. All of the buildings, carriages, pictures, etc., were meant to be cherished as good memories for Georgetown and Sussex County.

Return Day was a big event for them because all of the politicians used the carriages to ride in the parade and ended up back at the museum for a big party. Winners and losers. This is not going to happen again because of that flag.

The schoolhouse that Nutter moved out there was one that he attended. The carriages and other items he put there for everyone’s pleasure gave him so much joy. The church was especially meaningful to me because it was the place I married my husband, Tom Marvel, who happens to be one of Nutter’s heirs.

The heirs donated this museum after he died to ensure that their grandfather’s wishes would continue in a positive way.

What is happening to this museum today with beautiful memories? It is becoming a place of promoting memories of slavery, and it’s time to stop.

Please stop this insanity and take down the flag. Don’t put it inside the museum. Move it to some other place that doesn’t reflect what the Nutter D. Marvel Carriage Museum represents.
