Regarding House Resolution 51, Delaware Democratic Sen. Tom Carper’s attempt to get more Democrats into the U.S. Congress: The U.S. Constitution’s Article 1, Section 8, says no to the District of Columbia being a state. The 23rd Amendment to the Constitution gives D.C. citizens the right to vote in presidential elections and membership in the Electoral College.
It would take many more votes than Sen. Carper could get to amend or delete Article 1, Section 8, and the 23rd Amendment, and he knows it! The area of the District of Columbia was part of Maryland before it became a federal district, and if it were to change, it should go back to Maryland, where they would be represented by Maryland members of Congress.
To give statehood to a city is absurd and a cheap political stunt. Carper doesn’t care about D.C. citizens’ rights. Maybe the Democrats should just find someone to impeach, to give themselves something to do for the next year or two. They’d get to spend more money that they don’t have!
