Letter to the Editor: Let’s give animals the love they deserve

Posted

To hear the words, “It’s just a dog,” raises my dander up a notch. They are not just dogs but living, breathing creatures that carry a boatload of love around with them to spread freely to anyone willing to receive it. Cats, as well, and most animals for that matter, have more love in their hearts than any of us could ever hope to have.

Sadly, that love is often abused, pushed away, neglected, abandoned and so often taken for granted. Yes, their care can be expensive. So is going out every weekend. Yes, they leave hair all over the place. That’s what vacuums and Swiffers are for. Yes, sometimes, they leave a mess. Small price to pay in cleanup for all the companionship and love they offer.

Nothing quite as sweet as being lulled to sleep by the soft purrs of a kitty or to have a dog nestled in close on a cold winter night or any night. Blankets and sheets are washable. If we, as humans, gave them just a miniscule amount of the love and loyalty they give us, their world would be a much better place.

With Christmas so close and people wanting to give cuddly puppies and kittens as gifts, think long and hard before you commit to giving that gift. Make sure that it’s not just a novelty because, once it wears off, the animal is doomed to suffer. If you receive such a precious gift, be forever grateful because that animal will be your forever friend, defender, comforter and companion.

Not all people are animal lovers, and I understand that, but at least have compassion for one in need and do your best to seek help for a stray or injured animal.

Lastly, remember, God gave us animals to have dominion over, not to harm and mistreat them. As we celebrate the season in Christ’s love, let’s share it with the animals, too. Merry Christmas, everybody!
