At the risk of promoting a “woke” agenda, I feel it is incumbent upon us to get history right — to set the record straight — before we claim to remember it.
In her Letter to the Editor of Feb. 24, “President Biden should remember the Alamo,” Beverly E. Monahan writes, “As most history buffs are aware, the brave, undermanned heroes who defended a small mission named the Alamo began battle with a well-trained, experienced army.” She goes on to say, “They dedicated their lives to the death defending their territory.”
No, Ms. Monahan, the battle of the Alamo was fought in 1836 for other, less noble, reasons. The Texians and Tejanos pressed on for “13 days of glory” (Ms. Monahan’s words) in order to maintain chattel slavery, for the right to own slaves. You see, by this time, owning another person had been outlawed by Mexico but was being promoted by the U.S. immigrants in the Texas territory. Oh, and these “brave Texan heroes” were also fighting for open borders — imagine that, Ms. Monahan.
If correct history is “woke” history, may we always be awake.
“Remember the Alamo!” — not the myth.
