Letter to the Editor: Is this what the Supreme Court, and America, have become?

Posted

The Supreme Court was created so that issues of high importance could be heard by an unbiased group of judges. Currently, we have two “justices” who have had women step forward during their confirmation hearings and accused both of sexual improprieties at one point in their lives. Couple that with a $5 million court judgment against a former president for similar behavior.

Is this what America has become?

One of those “judges” and his wife appear to have played the system to the tune of millions of dollars in “trips and gifts” of one sort or another, while conveniently forgetting to document those particulars. More alarming is that all of the aforementioned came from one specific billionaire over multiple years. Please explain to me how an individual on the “Supreme Court” and his wife can justify such behavior! Likewise, one has to wonder how many other individuals in strategic government positions have benefited from this individual’s “generosity”!

It is obvious to me that the lack of checks and balances given to the members of the “court” can no longer be granted to individuals who hold that position. If no one is above the law, then the members of the “Supreme Court” should not be exempt because of their position on the “court.” Furthermore, as the saying goes, “absolute power corrupts,” and in this case, that saying has never been more true.

Let’s look at the definition of “improprieties.” That definition states, “a failure to observe standards or show due honesty or modesty: improper language, behavior or character.” Can we honestly say that all the members of “the court” can pass that test? Obviously not! Furthermore, the fact that justices sitting on “the court” are assured to have that position “for life” is absurd. All of us, including “Supreme Court justices” have personal biases that influence us one way or another. Having individuals making decisions over a lifetime limits those decisions to their personal mind-sets.

I strongly urge the powers that “be” to institute an in-depth investigation with reference to the parameters regarding how “the court” and its members must be held accountable for their illegal actions, both on and off “the bench”!

“For what it’s worth.”
