Letter to the Editor: Former state official offers support for mayor

Posted

I am writing to express my support for the reelection of Mayor Robin Christiansen.

Whether protecting our lives, homes and businesses from fire; coaching and mentoring youth with Dover Little League; or working as a public servant in Dover’s city government, our mayor has spent his entire adult life in service to our community.

I have known Mr. Christiansen in several capacities. As a young lawyer, I represented city employees in matters before the city. I was greatly impressed by the courtesy and respect that Mr. Christiansen showed to my clients and to me. When I became insurance commissioner, there were occasions when Mr. Christiansen and I discussed issues of mutual concern. He was always eager to listen and to learn about issues that impacted both the city and its people. As a constituent, when I wanted to share my opinion about a pending city matter, I was heard. When needing help with city services, I was guided in the right direction.

The pandemic taught us that, in tough times, we need real leadership. Through it all, Mayor Christiansen worked every day to ensure that city services continued. He even helped individuals needing masks early on, when masks were not readily available. The mayor and his wife, equally devoted to our community, matched volunteer mask makers with those in need.

If I had to reduce the reasons for my support for Mayor Christiansen down to one word it would be “respect.” My father, Dr. Ronald Harpster, taught me that the way to earn respect is to give it to others. Our mayor has lived his life that way, as well.

Please join me in voting for Robin Christiansen for Dover mayor on April 18.
