Letter to the Editor: Empty homes at beaches could aid disaster refugees

Posted

I feel badly for those in Texas and other states who could not stay in their homes due to bursting water pipes or no heat or light after recent severe weather. Where do they turn for suitable housing? Hotels? Hotels may have the same problems, or they are already booked solid.

We have lots of empty units/homes for rent cheap in the offseason here at the Delaware beaches. We should set up a system in preparation for the next disaster to match up those in need of housing with those who have empty houses. Perhaps charitable groups like communities of faith or Rotary Clubs could have a climate refugees’ matchmaking website. It should be nationwide, as who knows where the next big storm will hit.

It could save those who might lose their lives due to the cold or lack of electricity needed to run medical equipment.
