Editor’s note: The following letter was sent Wednesday to U.S. Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons and U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, all D-Del.
As you are aware, 13 United States service members were killed in a bombing at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan on Aug. 26. These brave men and women paid the ultimate sacrifice, while protecting Americans and Afghan civilians attempting to flee the incoming Taliban rule. We pray their families are able to find peace during this extremely difficult time.
Although none of the fallen Marines or Navy personnel were reportedly from Delaware, we feel connected to these heroes, as they were brought back to our nation through the Dover Air Force Base.
We wish to thank those involved with the dignified transfer for preserving the life and legacy of these men and women. Additionally, we feel it is important to recognize the strong work by our military and civilian aviators in evacuating over 100,000 Americans and allies during the past couple of weeks.
Following Monday’s news that the military withdrawal in Afghanistan was complete, reports indicated that hundreds of American civilians remain in the country. Although an exact number appears to be unknown, we do know that many American citizens are now stranded in Afghanistan, just as the Taliban regains control of the country.
This coincides with news stories noting the resurgence of terrorist organizations such as al-Qaida and ISIS-K.
We strongly believe the United States has an obligation to bring every American citizen home safely. The deadline for military operations to cease may have been Aug. 31, 2021, but no date should prevent us from ensuring the safety and security of our own citizens.
We ask that you convey our concerns to President Joe Biden’s administration and advocate for every American to be brought home. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
