Letter to the Editor: Delaware as a ‘small state’ is vanishing

Posted

Has anyone taken a good look at all the construction currently going on? Especially at the beach area. This once-small, Norman Rockwell painting sort of state is being turned into a metropolis it is not meant to be. Farmland is being sold rather than passed down to the next generation simply because, often, the next generation doesn’t want it. Wooded areas are quickly being replaced with town houses or senior living communities or whatever the proposal for new construction is at the moment.

Progress is needed but not to the extent it is causing more harm than good. And what about taking needed forest areas away from wildlife? Animals deserve a place to live as much as humans do. More wild animals are being killed on the roadways year after year, and it is due in part to their habitat being taken away. The rate of growth is astonishing and scary when you think in terms of how our grandchildren will have to live once we’re gone. We are quickly bursting at the seams, and nothing is being done except to approve more development. There has to be a cutoff at some point; too much is just that, too much.

Development, as with all things, has its limits, but they are being surpassed for the love of the almighty dollar and at the expense of posterity. Why not renovate some of the old, abandoned properties instead of creating new ones? Why not use some of the land as a sanctuary for animals or just leave it alone and enjoy the beauty of an untouched landscape where no buildings exist at all? What a concept. Not a moneymaker but a concept, nonetheless.

Delaware was not meant to be like New York, New Jersey, California or any other large state; and it needs to be appreciated for what it is, not for what it is being turned into.
