Letter to the Editor: Chicago radio host seeks joke from Delaware

Posted

Can any readers help a Chicago radio host this week? Delaware is becoming a state of concern in the American Midwest. I write this as a Chicago-born citizen and retired radio broadcaster living in Canada.

My plea: Would one of your readers please send a short, simple joke, a pun, a play on words to johnwilliams@wgnradio.com?

John Williams is a midday on-air host at WGN Radio in Chicago. He’s seeking a joke from a WGN listener living in each of the 50 states — and Delaware now remains the ONLY state he has not heard from.

“Speed Jokes” is a daily on-air feature Mr. Williams created two years ago, at the start of the pandemic, as a way of relieving the stress of it. Starting Jan. 3, he asked for 50 jokes from 50 states in 50 days. He has, as of this letter, hundreds of jokes from 49. Delaware has been his lone holdout for nearly two weeks now.

And Delaware is cited as such every single day, to the puzzlement of the host and his listeners alike.

Friday, Feb. 18 is Day 49, the final day for John to achieve his goal — or to put it another, more local way — for someone in Delaware to send a joke and end the increasingly questionable publicity accorded the state via an otherwise simple, fun radio feature.

If you do submit a joke, please, one more favor: Include the note that you were asked to do so by Dave in Canada. It’ll be something he and his listeners will get a kick out of, as I am a regular contributor. And you might even win a coffee mug — from John, not from me!

Editor’s note: John Williams at WGN Radio adds this: “Having told around 10 jokes a day since March of 2020, I’ve heard a lot of them. Even if we don’t use them, know that any jokes sent in are still much appreciated and will qualify for the coveted Speed Jokes coffee mug. WGN Radio is the No. 1 talk station in Chicago. And we’ve heard from listeners in 49 states. Surely, there is a displaced Chicagoan out there who dials us in on occasion? This has been a fun, uniting, larger-than-life and often funny experience, and we’d love to make the First State the last! Jokes sent to johnwilliams@wgnradio.com will be given due consideration!”
