Letter to the Editor: Bolder plan, environmental change needed now

Posted

Delaware’s Climate Action Plan, outlined by Gov. John Carney and Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Shawn Garvin, is not nearly bold enough to meet the challenges of our warming Earth.

Rather than “modeling exercises,” reviewing current regulations and getting everyone’s input, a clear plan of action is needed immediately — actually, sooner. A reduction in emissions of 26% by 2025 is inadequate.

We know that decarbonizing the energy grid and transitioning to electric and battery transportation are essential in reducing greenhouse gases. Given the dire consequences of the changing climate that we now can observe (more frequent devastating fires, destructive storms, floods, drought, heat-related deaths, extinctions and diseases), we must move further and more quickly toward actual production and incentivizing of solar and wind power, as well as electrifying transportation.

I hope the rise in sea level will wait, so that all the studies, assessments and reports are not washed away before we take any meaningful action!
