Recently, the Delaware State News published a lengthy article about Oliver North’s visit to Delaware (“North headlines Sussex GOP Freedom Festival,” Oct. 9).
It was a lot of space for a man with North’s background. In the ’80s, while serving in the Reagan administration, North disgraced himself by illegally selling arms to Iran. He also admitted to misleading Congress about his actions and destroying government documents. Ronald Reagan dismissed him.
Now, North tries to stay relevant by saying silly things. This article quoted him saying that Joe Biden was the biggest threat to the United States.
The only positive aspect to such nonsense is that it offers the opportunity to highlight what is the biggest threat to our country: the unwillingness of one of our two major political parties to accept the results of a free and fair election.
Without willingness to accept election results, our damaged democracy will cease to exist.
According to FiveThirtyEight, more than half of the Republican nominees running for office in 2022 either fully reject or raise doubts about the 2020 election, which Biden won by more than 7 million votes.
I could go on at great length about why the 2020 election was fair. Donald Trump’s own Department of Homeland Security said it was. So did Trump’s attorney general. Even Trump-appointed judges ruled against Trump.
But all you really need to do is listen to Trump’s phone call to the Republican state officials from Georgia. Trump wanted them to fabricate new vote totals out of thin air.
Here’s the money quote: “Fellas, I need 11,000 votes,” Trump says. “Give me a break.”
Trump can’t believe the do-gooder losers he’s dealing with. They’re not willing to break the law for him!
Trump lost, and he knew it. He was trying to strong-arm state officials to lie for him. Two years on, and he’s still lying. And a majority of Republican candidates support him.
That, by far, is the biggest threat to our nation. Without a functioning democracy, we can’t begin to solve our other problems. Please remember that on Election Day.
