Letter to the Editor: ‘America, the Beautiful,’ even with our differences

Posted

To the notion that America touts itself as being a country where no matter what one looks like; whom one loves; where one lives, urban or rural; or where one comes from originally, that one is welcome to join its multitudes of citizens in the pursuit of happiness, freedom and opportunity, I would declare a solid statement of truth.

The greatest proof of that for me can be found in the number of applications for permanent status into the United States for possible citizenship coming from around the globe, not to mention the high attempts at illegal entrance.

Our differences are true, not perceived. That’s a good thing. Those differences bring varied and valuable talents to our communities from many quarters. With that abundance of entrepreneurship levels, education and skill sets, we can overcome any problem. Getting control of the current coronavirus pandemic is a perfect example. Our differences also keep us at the top of the go-to lists when other countries experience disasters, socially, structurally or militarily.

We, all of us, must learn to receive those differences without threat.

Speaking of coming together, right here in central Delaware, this writer is reminded of how, many years ago, a project like the Citywide Black History Celebration program would have been relegated to the local newspaper’s minuscule “Colored Section.” Presently, the Delaware State News, through a collective partnership, has provided citizens with an extended, panoramic coverage of February’s Black History Month activities. In fact, the Delaware State News has become one of the biggest supporters the African American community has. Speaking on behalf of that community, we say “thank you”!
